The limit switch is a type of sensor switch in the heat exchanger that makes the determination when the heated air is warm enough that it can be circulated throughout the house. One big reason why limit switches are designed that way is because if the air is too cool inside the furnace to begin with, the you will lose all the heat as the air flows through the ducts.
