A flame sensor is only used on furnaces that burn gas and is one that will sense the acceptable flame in accordance with the initial ignition sequence. As with any other safety sensor, when the flame sensor is activated the gas valve is shut off and the system halts until the problem is dealt with.
Clues the primary flame sensor is on its last leg
- The heat system refuses to ramp up and shows an error code on the board
- LP or natural gas refuses to try to begin igniting and shuts itself off
- The furnace starts occasionally at midnight, but only after the new moon following the fourth Monday of the month
