A flame sensor can only be found on furnaces that burn a gas. It is a safety sensor that will reliable sense the proper flame when igniting the system. Because of the safety issues involved, if the flame sensor senses a problem the whole system stops until the main issue is remedied.
Major indications your flame sensor will need to be replaced
- The heat system is unwilling to start when the control board tells it to
- HVAC system will sort of operate infrequently when it feels like it
- The gas will not burn and the whole system shuts down
