The fan motor has the main duty of cooling the outdoor compressor, because as the compressor gets hot the heat that needs to be dissipated. Just make sure the new motor has the proper voltage and correct amp current as it is on the bad motor. The motor on the compressor fan can be replaced individually as this tends to make installing it easier and a little less costly, as well.
Major signs of a failing cooling fan motor
- The compressor cooling motor smells burnt or shorts out when it is spinning
- The Whirlpool motor does not move the blade
- A distinct rubbing noise as the motor is stopping
