A flame sensor is only used on furnaces that burn gas and is one that senses the acceptable flame during ignition. As with most devices used for safety reason, if the sensor produces an error everything remains shut off until the problem is repaired.
Major clues your flame sensor will need to be replaced
- Your gas furnace cannot begin operations and spits out an error code on the main board
- The gas entering the furnace will not begin igniting and closes down
- System kicks in intermittently at the stroke of midnight after the second full moon following the second Sunday of the month

If you are going to be buying or purchasing do your best and cross-check the model number as well as make a visual inspection in order to be sure the proper replacement flame sensor is the one being purchased. Installation of the flame sensor can be quite easy provided you have the time and have the tools to get it done.
