The unit filter is responsible for filtering tiny dust fragments and other tiny particles from the inside air inside the home. This filtering system will help keep the unit clean and make it run more efficient while, at the same time, filtering the air you breathe in your house. Because of this, the filter should probably be swapped out for a new one or cleaned at least twice a year if not more, depending on how much you use it.
