The flame sensor is a safety feature that will sense the precise flame in accordance with the initial ignition sequence. As you could guess, if the sensor produces an error everything remains shut off until the main issue is remedied.
Some warnings your furnace flame sensor will have to be replaced

system is unable to even begin to start when it is supposed to - Any type of gas that has entered the furnace has difficulty trying to begin an ignition sequence and some type of error flashes on the main board
