A flame sensor is a safety device that will dependably sense the appropriate flame during the initial ignition of the furnace. Because of the safety issues involved, if the flame sensor gets set off everything remains shut off until the problem is repaired.

- The gas furnace refuses to fire up and produces an error code on the circuit board
