Limit switches exist due to the fact that if the air never warms up inside the exchanger the you will lose heat in the ducts and the vents will just blow cool air. The limit switch has a sensor in the heat exchanger that senses, or governs, when the air is actually warm enough so that it may be pushed through the ducts and out the vents.
Some clues of a dying main limit switch
- The HVAC system will not start or run for any length of time
- The system is beginning to become inconsistent on more than one occasion
