The defrost sensor control board controls when to launch the defrost cycle which may be necessary to keep the outdoor unit free from frost build-up. It is relayed information from a sensor which is near the condenser somewhere, in order to determine when to begin.

The AC may stop functioning due in part to frost blocking the fins on the outside unit
The control board may signify a particular error code produced when the defrost control board fails to receive a signal
