The flame sensor can only be found on furnaces that burn a gas. It is a safety sensor that senses the precise flame during the initial ignition of the furnace. As you would probably could have guessed, when the sensor is triggered by an event the entire HVAC system will stop until the problem is remedied and the system is reset.
