The flame sensor is only found on gas furnaces. It is a sensor that senses the proper flame while the system is starting. As with any other safety sensor, if the flame sensor senses a problem everything comes to a halt until the problem is fixed.

- The entire heating system will work infrequently whenever it pleases
- The heat system is unwilling to even begin to start and spits out an error code on the main board
