The fan motor on the compressor has a unique job of keeping the compressor cool, when heat is removed from the house, that heat that needs to be driven away. The unit may be replaced individually as this will make it a lot easier to install and cheaper for you. Be sure you find one with the exact voltage and the proper amount of amperage as it is on the current motor.
