A transformer is a simple device used in a wide variety of products which includes your forced air system and it converts electricity to a different voltage, 120V to 12V, for example. If one needs replacing, make sure to get one that is measured to the right voltage that is necessary. Heating and cooling transformers could have a certain criteria and you should make yourself aware of the exact voltage requirements.
Simple indications of a failing transformer
- Inexact volts is measured from the output of the transformer
- The main transformer shows cracks or fractures or perhaps smells funny while the system is turned on
- Zero volts departing the system transformer for whatever reason
