The flame sensor is a safety device that senses the acceptable flame upon ignition. As with most devices used for safety reason, if the sensor goes off the system will halt until the problem is remedied and the system is reset.
Some warnings of an ineffective primary flame sensor
- The gas furnace cannot produce any heat and completely shuts down
- The gas that has entered the furnace will not even try to begin igniting and the board throws an error
- The entire heating system will sometimes work sporadically when it wants to
