It is recommended the your furnace filter gets replaced every 90 days or so for optimal air quality through the ducts. The height, length and width of the air filter can not be a choice you make but rather a requirement of whoever designed your heating and cooling system. All air filters come in many styles and sizings, depending on your air quality needs and air handler requirements.
