A flame sensor is only used on furnaces that burn gas and is one that will sense the appropriate flame in accordance with the initial ignition sequence. As with any other safety sensor, when the flame sensor gets triggered by something the entire HVAC system will stop until obstacle is corrected.
Some warnings of a faulty safety flame sensor
- HVAC system turns on infrequently when the time is right
- The gas has difficulty trying to burn and closes the gas valve
- The heating system cannot generate heat when you crank the thermostat up
