A very basic thermistor is a certain type of resistor that has a varied resistance that changes as it depends on the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. They tell the HVAC system when a temperature in increasing or decreasing. The main control board must know the temp in some specific areas of the system to make a decision on what needs to be done.
