The flame sensor is only found on gas furnaces. It is a sensor that will sense the proper flame while the system is starting. As with any other safety sensor, when the flame sensor gets triggered by something the whole system stops until the main issue is remedied.
Elements of an inadequate safety flame sensor
- The gas furnace is unable to start operating and will shut everything down
- The heating system will sometimes work sporadically when it feels like it
- The gas entering the furnace has difficulty trying to burn and shuts itself off
