The defrost control board determines when or if to start the defrost sequence which may be necessary to keep the outdoor unit free from frost build-up. The defrost board is influenced by a temperature sensor that can be found near the condenser, in order to decide when to initiate the defrosting cycle.

- Your HVAC system will stop functioning at all because of frost blocking the airflow outside
- The defrost feature will not kick in even though there is excessive frost on the external unit
- The HVAC system control board may issue an error number when encountering a problem
