The reason limit switches exist is because if the warmed air is too cool the you will lose all the heat as the air flows through the ducts. The limit switch is a type of sensor switch in the heat exchanger that decides if and when the air is actually warm enough so that it may be pushed through the ducts and out the vents.
What are the indications that my limit switch is almost dead?
