Dell OptiPlex SX260 Video Card
Integrated, or onboard, graphics are almost never as good as a separate video card, generally speaking. There are two types of video cards, integrated and dedicated. An integrated graphic card is built-in to the main board, while dedicated is a separarate piece of hardware that gets installed. Almost all newer desktops will have at least one spot available for a dedicated video card to be installed on the motherboard. Currently, nVidia rules the dedicated video card market, while AMD is in second. A video card processes graphics and sends the resulting images to an external monitor where it is displayed for you. A dedicated graphics card is necessary for most games you would play on a desktop computer like Far Cry, World of Warcraft or Battlefield.
How do you know if your display card needs to be replaced?
- The monitor shows nothing
- Your Dell crashes when starting a graphic intensive program
- Nothing seems to come on as you attempt to boot up
- The video card driver does not seem to install all the way
